Family Law Legal Assistance Project at Monterey County Bar Association provides low-cost legal assistance and court representation on a sliding scale to low and middle income residents of Monterey County. You did nothing wrong.’" His enthusiasm has helped to transform a small grassroots nonprofit which started in August of 2012 with 147 individuals who had submitted applications to the federal government for DACA status, into an invaluable local network with more than 1,700 active clients to date, with individuals served also including legal permanent residents, naturalized citizens and temporary visa holders.
In the past year, the organization has also expanded its goals beyond DACA-related assistance to include local needs such as the rights of low-income tenants as well as youth and women’s rights.
"Without a legal aid organization like MCCJ to guide our here in Monterey County, where our pockets of poverty are among the highest in the state, we don’t know what we would do," says Jayme Cantu, a leadership council representative. "People desperately want legal help but don’t have the resources to pay for it."
"By coordinating with local volunteer attorneys and volunteers who deliver hand-held assistance, we’re able to help immigrants navigate the intricate process of applying for the DACA program and obtain a reprieve from deportation," continues Cantu. "Some of our clients don’t have birth certificates because they were born in countries that don’t issue them. Additionally, an individual’s family situation can also play into their DACA application and we also help them address the impact of all of this on their work and education opportunities."

"When I got DACA, I was able to get a job. I have been working in the same field ever since and getting paid well. Before I received DACA, I worked under the table and was scared of being caught or anything happening to me. But now, thanks to my status, I can work legally and go to college and obtain my dreams."
